Day one

For anything you do, there will always be a “day one.” Your first sketch. Your first post. Your first workout. The trick isn’t to nail it. The trick is to get better at starting—whatever it is. To just do it.

The latest thing I started (or rather, restarted) was creating a physical, hand-written collection of original thoughts. The “official” term for this is a Zettelkasten.

Now pause.

Already, you might feel the wave of complexity coming:

“Fleeting note” this. “Second brain” that.

Ignore all of it.

Don’t get stuck thinking you have to do something a certain way just because it has a name.

My collection started with a single note. The first note.

My personal trackers? One entry. The first entry.

The worst thing you can do is punish yourself for not having it all figured out before you’ve even started.

Instead, give yourself a little grace.

Celebrate the fact that you began something—something that maybe scared you just yesterday.

Your journey won’t look like anyone else’s. Your day one won’t either. And that’s exactly how it should be.

It doesn’t matter what it looks like. What matters is that it’s yours.

And that you started.

P.S. I've published every single one of my zettelkasten notes so far - transcribed and uploaded to my notes site. You can check them out here.
